Check out these 8 fascinating details about Gucci’s life and career below.

1. Gucci’s stage name was inspired by his family

During an interview with radio host Ebro Darden, Gucci Mane gave an explanation of the history behind his well-known stage name. Since it was originally his nickname, the rapper gave credit to his father. Moreover, Big Guwop’s grandfather was a fervent fan of the upscale clothing line Gucci at the time. As a tribute to his father, this eventually started the nickname “Lil’ Gucci” among his family and neighbors. Subsequently, since people already knew him as such, this translated to the pioneer using the name in the early part of his career. Even though he goes by Gucci Mane now, he still refers to his father as the first “Gucci Man.”

2. His birthplace was Alabama.

In 1980, Gucci Mane was born Radric Delantic Davis. His family moved from Bessemer, Alabama, where his grandfather was living, in 1989. Andscape claims that he was born and reared in Atlanta, Georgia, and that it was there that he first became well-known in the city’s drug trade. He got his start in the industry, developed a following as a budding rap artist, and learned how to hustle in Atlanta.

3. He writes best-selling books.

Fans and music enthusiasts were eager to hear from the rap legend about his experience and future plans following his release from prison in 2016. He wrote an autobiography in response, discussing his early career experiences, his incarceration, and how he overcame both personal and professional adversity. La Flare began writing while serving his sentence in prison, according to NPR, and made a personal commitment to, in his own words, “start doing better.” This involved being vulnerable by telling his story to fans, which ultimately contributed to the book’s success. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in the first week of its release, the book peaked at No. 1 among books about hip-hop and at No. 24 on Amazon’s Best Sellers List.

4. He launched his own clothing brand.

Following the publication of his autobiography in 2017, Gucci Mane debuted his own clothing brand, Delantic. This, like many of his endeavors, was well-received by both fans and critics. According to Billboard, in order to realize his vision, the Trap God worked with well-known design team Peter and Patty Chung, who are the brains behind several well-known brands, including Supreme and UNDERCOVER. The East Atlanta-inspired apparel brand attracted more attention by showcasing celebrities like Lil Xan and 21 Savage as models. Several T-shirt designs from the first collection, Fan Fiction, were put together with the assistance of fans and other well-known artists.

5. He started his own label.

Gucci Mane deliberately added some smoldering heat to his already chilly career. Initially called 1017 Brick Squad Records, he founded 1017 Records in 2007. According to a 2010 press release from PR Newswire, Atlanta became home to rappers like Waka Flocka Flame as the city developed into one of the premier hip-hop hotspots. Rebranding and upholding its legacy, the company, now known as The New 1017, has signed new artists like Pooh Shiesty and Foogiano.

6. Gucci is honored on a specific day.

Atlanta was the location of the official 2023 announcement of Gucci Mane Day to the general public. The famous day was set to fall on October 17 in satire of the rapper’s notorious use of the number “1017” for both his record label and career. Gucci and his fans will always remember that day because it was also the release of his album Breath of Fresh Air.

7. A great number of the living legend’s songs have reached the Billboard Hot 100.

Years into the music business, Mr. Zone 6’s influence is still felt strongly by other musicians. The rap mogul was featured on Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart for seven weeks in a row in 2016, according to Billboard. Furthermore, his song “I Get The Bag,” which features Migos, was on the chart for 27 weeks in total, finally tying the record held by the “Black Beatles.” Several hits featuring cameos from Gucci Mane have made the Hot 100, such as “Party” featuring Chris Brown and Usher, “Like That” featuring Doja Cat, and “Make Love” featuring Nicki Minaj. There were 36 as of June 2024, and there will undoubtedly be many more.
