The Cancer Institute was able to save the life of a critically ill patient who had relapsed from multiple myeloma by performing a bone marrow transplant.
Multiple myeloma is a kind of blood cancer that affects plasma cells. Plasma cells are specialized blood cells that create antibodies to combat infection. The patient, who is 55 years old and whose identity has been concealed, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
Patients who have this disorder have abnormal plasma cells that build up in the bone marrow, which hinders the generation of regular blood cells. It can also damage the kidneys, bones, and other organs of the body, preventing them from functioning normally, according to Dr. M. Gopinathan, an associate consultant in hematology and oncology who specializes in bone marrow transplantation (BMT).
The initial kind of treatment that was administered was chemotherapy, and then bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was performed in order to reach a satisfactory level of disease control.
