Due to Brexit, British tourists visiting Europe should verify their health insurance before traveling.
SchengenVisaInfo.com advises Britons visiting EU or Swiss countries to carry a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or EHIC.
British and EU travelers face different laws since the UK is no longer in the EU. British non-EU nationals can also receive a GHIC, however they may need Schengen Travel Insurance.
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) covers any medically required care.
According to the Mirror, Britons must have health insurance with healthcare coverage per UK government recommendations.
“EHICs and GHICs are not travel insurance. “Ensure you have both before you travel,” the Department of Health and Social Care said.
Britons with GIHCs can receive discounted or free public healthcare in European nations.
In a statement, the government also listed what EU nations cover to support travelers.
After the EHIC is still accepted, persons with a valid EHIC (replaced by the GHIC) do not need to apply for a new one.
Some nations do not charge travelers for treatment.
An EHIC or GHIC cannot replace travel insurance since it does not cover mountain rescue or medical repatriation to the UK.
MondialCare and Europ Assistance supply the Schengen Visa insurance paperwork for UK applicants.
Without an EHIC, GHIC, or interim replacement certificate, travelers must pay for their care.
The Mirror reported that some European nations do not recognise the GHIC or EHIC
- the Vatican
- the Isle of Man
- Monaco
- Jersey
- San Marino
If they need treatment or lose their EHIC or GHIC, non-holders must apply for a PRC.
