Yamuna’s water quality improves 2023

According to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) statistics.

BOD levels in the Najafgarh drain have dropped 33% since last year, boosting the Yamuna River’s health.

The ditch discharges 70% of Yamuna wastewater.

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), an essential water quality metric, is the quantity of oxygen aerobic microbes need to breakdown organic material in a water body. Good BOD is below 3 mg/L.

On Friday, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena’s high-level committee provided DPCC statistics. The LG secretariat stated that DPCC data showed a “consistent improvement” in the water quality of the Najafgarh drain and Yamuna month-by-month.

The DPCC reported 53 mg/l BOD in the Najafgarh drain in January, down from 80 mg/l previous year. In May, it was 48 mg/l, down from 76 last year.

Near the inter-state bus terminal, where the Najafgarh drain meets the Yamuna, BOD levels were 42 mg/l in January 2022 and 38 mg/l in January 2023. 55 mg/l in May 2022 down to 38 mg/l in May 2023.

“Even during February, March, and April, the figures for 2023 showed a consistent decrease from the figures of corresponding months in 2022,” the LG secretariat said.

The LG praised stakeholder departments for cleaning the Yamuna at the meeting. The statement said he warned cops against complacency and urged them to achieve deadlines and coordinate across departments.
